The washing machine is a key element in any rental; not only is it an additional amenity to offer your travellers, but it is especially essential for you when it comes to washing linens between bookings. However, to ensure proper operation and longevity, it is important to maintain it. The door seal, drum, and filter require special attention. Follow these tips to efficiently clean your washing machine...

The detergent tray

Remove the tray from its slot, most are removable, and rinse each compartment with warm water. To remove any stubborn detergent residue, scrub with a toothbrush. You can also add a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Dry the tray before replacing it.

The door seals

Perhaps you‘ve already noticed traces of blackish dirt in the folds of the door gasket or around the rim of the window? To remove those horrible mould build-ups, make a 50/50 mixture of hot water and bleach in a tub. Using a clean cloth soaked with the mixture, wipe down the seal to clean it as much as possible. If stains persist, fully soak the cloth in the mixture and place it on the seal so as to cover the dirty area. Let it sit for half an hour before gently scrubbing with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Wipe down with a damp cloth and then dry it off with a clean dry one.

The drum

To clean the drum, run the machine once a month on a short, high temperature cycle, ideally around 90°. It will also prevent the gasket (the drum’s rubber rim) from blackening. You can use this opportunity to wash a few rags as well. Now we need to descale the drum. To do this, simply pour 1 litre of white vinegar either into the tray or directly into the drum itself and run a high temperature wash.

The pump filter

The filters must also be regularly cleaned, about once every three months, to remain effective. They are generally located behind a panel on the front of the machine. The very first thing you need to do is empty any water from the pump. To do this, place a bucket or a mop under the opening and then unscrew the filter without completely removing it so that the water flows. Once drained of excess water, you can remove the filter and wash off any build-up with soapy water. A soft toothbrush can also help. Take the opportunity to make sure there are no small objects (coins, buttons...) caught in the filter cavity. You can now replace the filter making sure it’s fully tightened.

The fill and drain hoses

Sometimes a brown deposit can build up in these hoses; a common source for bad odours. Once a year, clean it by running a mixture of hot water and white vinegar through them. At the same time check to make sure there are no cracks or signs of wear and tear. If they are damaged or too dirty to recuperate, don’t hesitate to replace them with identical models. Additionally, make sure that the joints on either end are in good condition. Finally, carefully tighten the pipe collars to fix them back in place, beware of leaks!

Your washing machine has just undergone a rejuvenating makeover! But keep in mind a few simple recommendations: leave the door open after each wash (this will prevent mould and odour build-up), favour liquid detergents to powders and most importantly don’t use too much to avoid clogging the machine further.
