Before check-in, you always make sure that your rental is perfectly clean, but do you think to check the inside of the microwave oven? Your previous guests may have used it to cook, heat up or thaw out dishes, and food may have splattered the inner walls. The appliance then becomes a bacterial nest that must be carefully cleaned. Here are simple, economical and natural tricks to clean and disinfect your microwave...

Microwave in a kitchenLeroy Merlin

The turntable

Start by cleaning the turntable and its support, and for that, all you need is hot water, washing up liquid and a sponge.

The door

To wash the exterior face of the door, take a non-abrasive sponge soaked with hot water and dishwashing detergent. Don’t forget to clean the joints which you can scrub with a toothbrush.

The microwave walls

Take a small container, such as a bowl, and fill it with 1/3 of lemon juice and 2/3 of water. Place it inside the microwave oven and heat until it boils. Steam will emerge; let it act for a few minutes, as it will soften the dirt on the walls and make it easy to clean off. All you’ll have to do is pass a damp sponge over the walls to wipe them clean. Aside from helping clean the microwave, this lemon steam will also deodorize it. Note that it is also possible to replace the portion of lemon juice with white vinegar and add just a few drops of lemon to give off a pleasant smell.
