As part of a welcoming hospitality, many hosts leave small gifts for their travellers. But the question then arises; what to choose? A bottle of wine, some chocolates, a mug…? Why not do something a little different and create a custom soap bar? Your guests will most certainly notice the attention to detail, especially if you slip in a little surprise! If families with children are welcome in your rental, well you can already imagine their smiles! Making a homemade soap is very easy, inexpensive and only takes a few minutes. All you have to do is find a fun little object that will delight your guests and the job’s done. Here are the DIY steps detailing how to create your very own soapy surprise bars

Steps for making your own soap

  1. Melt a few cubes of glycerine (found in hobby craft stores) in a bowl in a microwave oven for two to three minutes or using the bain-marie method. Be careful not to boil the glycerine.
  2. Now it’s time to personalize! You can add a few drops of essential oils to the glycerine fondue to perfume your soap, a little dye to create that perfect shade, drops of moisturizing oil or even glitter. Mix it all together with a stick or a spoon.
  3. In the smooth mould of your choice, place the object that will be at the heart of your soap; a toy, something from nature, shells, an Eiffel Tower key ring… all that’s left to do is pour in the glycerine mixture to fill the mould.
  4. Allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes before putting it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Once the soap is well cooled and completely solid, you can demould it. Voila! A fun and creative home-made soap in 4 easy steps!
